Remembering George Tietjen

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of George on June 30, after a fight with cancer.

He is survived by his wife Maria, his son Olaf (Maggie), daughter Sonya,
granddaughters Stephanie (Shayne) and Kimberly, and his first wife Heide.

George was born in Bremen, Germany on September 20, 1927 and immigrated to Canada in 1953, settling first in Edmonton, then Toronto before setting roots in his beloved Vancouver in 1956.

He began his lengthy career in the Travel Industry by opening the Lufthansa German Airlines Sales Office in Vancouver in 1956. After logging thousands of miles across Western Canada promoting Lufthansa, George moved from the airline side of the business to join Burke's World Wide Travel as VP Marketing. After learning the business, George struck out to open his own Travel Agency-Travels by George and Tour Company-Pro Tours.

George was also very active in the travel industry, as a Past President of the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA) and as a trusted advisor during the establishment of the B.C. Travel Assurance Fund.

George retired in 1992, but continued with his passion for travel, always planning the next adventure. His family, friends and fellow travelers will miss him dearly as he embarks on this, his next journey.

Special thanks to Dr. Wayne Smith of West Vancouver and the Nursing Staff at the North Shore Hospice for taking such good care of George.

George requested that there be no formal service, but a celebration of life will be announced to friends and family at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the North Shore Hospice Society or a charity of your choice. More details can be found here
