ACTA is sharing the following update received from Global Affairs Canada for your situational awareness as you support clients currently in destination or with upcoming travel to Mexico.
 
ACTA remains in contact with Global Affairs Canada, airlines, and travel suppliers and is seeking any additional updates regarding the anticipated duration of the elevated advisory levels and related operational impacts. Airlines and travel suppliers are assessing upcoming operations in line with their commitment to the safety of their customers and crew. We have been informed that flexible options are being put in place for affected bookings, with details available directly from airlines or travel suppliers via industry specific portals or websites and on customer facing websites.

Global Affairs Canada updated the safety and security section of its  in light of the evolving situation.
 
Violent incidents in various parts of Mexico
 
Criminal groups have set up roadblocks with burning vehicles in several cities in various parts of Mexico. There have been shootouts with security forces and explosions, including on roads and highways connecting affected areas to Mexico City.
 
Security incidents have taken place across the country, especially in the following states:
  1. Jalisco, including Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta
  2. Guerrero, including Acapulco
  3. Michoacán
  4. Sinaloa, including Mazatlán
  5. Quintana Roo, including Cancun
  6. Baja California, including Tijuana and Tecate
  7. Nayarit
 
The security situation could deteriorate rapidly in these locations and in others across Mexico.
 
Shelter in place orders are in effect in Jalisco and Nayarit. Similar instructions, including curfews, may be issued on short notice in other areas of the country.
 
There are significant disruptions to travel and transportation, including flight delays and cancellations.

  • avoid the affected areas
  • keep a low profile and limit your movements
  • follow the advice of local authorities, including any curfews and orders to shelter in place
  • monitor local and international media to stay informed of the rapidly evolving situation
  • before making your way to the airport, check with your airline to determine if there are delays or changes in flight schedules
