ETIAS in Europe delayed until further notice

Earlier this month, ACTA shared information regarding the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which the European Union had planned to implement for travel to 30 European destinations in the last quarter of 2026. The implementation timeline has now been delayed until further notice. ACTA will continue to monitor developments and share updates with members as new information becomes available.

In the meantime, the Entry/Exit System (EES) remains operational. The EES is a digital border management system that records the entry and exit of non-EU nationals, including Canadian citizens, travelling to countries within the Schengen Area for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The system replaces manual passport stamping with digital records of travellers' border crossings. No action is required before departure, as travellers will be registered upon arrival at their destination.

ACTA continues to encourage travel advisors and Canadian travellers to consult official travel resources, including Global Affairs Canada's Travel Advice and Advisories, the Travelling to Europe page, and the official EU ETIAS website for the latest information. Canadians are also encouraged to register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service before travelling to receive important updates about their destination.
