The Insurance Council of British Columbia is currently conducting a consultation on proposed changes to the Restricted Insurance Agency (RIA) framework, including potential requirements such as commission disclosure. These changes could significantly impact how travel insurance is sold and how travel advisors support their clients.

ACTA has already submitted formal feedback outlining key concerns, including the risk of consumer confusion, unintended market impacts, and the unique nature of travel insurance distribution that may not align with a blanket regulatory approach.

Now, it’s essential that individual voices are heard.

We strongly encourage all members to:

  • Submit your feedback directly to the Insurance Council of British Columbia using the official consultation channels before the deadline (April 27, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. PDT):
  • Contact your Provincial Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) to ensure decision-makers understand the real-world impact these proposed changes may have on your business and your clients. Use this link to quickly send your message.

Important: Individuals sending a letter in a personal capacity are not required to register or report under the BC Lobbyists Registry. However, if you are corresponding on behalf of a company or organization, applicable requirements set by the Office of the Registrar of Lobbyists for BC must be followed.

The consultation period is open until April 27, 2026, and stakeholder input will directly inform the final regulatory framework.

This is a critical opportunity to advocate for a balanced, practical approach—one that protects consumers while preserving access to professional travel advice and supporting a sustainable travel industry.
