ACTA hosts Airport and Hotel Tour in Halifax

On June 7 ACTA members from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick gathered at the Alt Hotel Halifax Airport to enjoy a tour of the hotel property and take in a "back lot" tour of the airport.

Mark Schay, Tasha Ransome, and Tara Kelly of the Alt Hotel welcomed our members and showed us around the very modern and energy efficient hotel with its updated bedrooms, ball room, indoor pool and lobby area. The tour concluded with a generous lunch in the hotel lounge.

Following lunch guests ventured across an enclosed walkway into the Halifax Stanfield International Airport and were welcomed by Richard Garson, Kelly Martin and Nicole Scalpen.

Once in the airport ACTA members toured the main level, through security and into the baggage area where the high tech baggage system which tracks the baggage from the time it enters the area until it is loaded onto the plane was shared and observed.

As the tour moved into arrivals we were met by a representative of Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) who guided us through restricted areas while explaining processes for visitors landing at the airport. It was interesting to view a glass wall bathroom. This bathroom is used sepcifically for suspicious visitors and potential drug smugglers who have been detained into custody.

A ride up the elevator brought us to the Observation Deck where a presentation was delivered by Halifax Regional Police including Tazz, a German shepherd service dog specializing in searching for explosives. His handler talked about service dogs and gave us a demonstration of Tazz’s abilities.

ACTA Atlantic would like to thank everyone involved in this year’s tour. We had a great day, learned a lot and had fun while doing it.
