118 people arrested in global air ticket fraud swoop

In a coordinated global operation, police officers waiting at major hub airports around the world have arrested 118 suspected ticket fraudsters. The investigation spanned 45 countries, including Australia, and came to a head at the weekend. The crime: a billion-dollar fraud involving use of stolen credit cards to buy plane tickets.

Airlines and travel agents worked with law enforcement agencies from many countries to mount the operation, which extended to over 60 airlines and 80 airports. Credit card industries were involved too.

Named Global Airport Action, the operation – the third of its kind – was coordinated through three centres: Europol in The Hague, Interpol in Singapore and Ameripol in Bogota.
